Scholarship Pitfalls

Scholarships are not only for college! Many scholarships are offered for post secondary education (such as: college, technical school, culinary, etc).  Please check the scholarship criteria carefully to see if applicable to your situation!

FAILURE TO CHECK FOR SCHOLARSHIPS: Remember to check the Guidance webpage http://www.torrington.org/page.cfm?p=283 for scholarships that become available. Scholarships are added on a frequent basis so please be sure to check it at least once a week!

FAILURE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS: Many submitted applications are disqualified because all requested and necessary documentation have not been submitted with the application. READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!

BEWARE OF DEADLINES: Failure to adhere to stated deadlines can cause you to lose out on scholarship opportunities. Plan of action – Complete and submit your applications well before the deadline.

ENVELOPE & STAMP(S): When an original transcript is required to be sent with a scholarship application, please remember to provide a stamped envelope addressed to the scholarship organization together with a signed Transcript Release form (make sure proper postage is on envelope)! Again….. be aware of deadlines! Transcript releases,  teacher recommendations, etc., take time to assemble so please submit applications at least 5 days prior to the deadline date!

FAILURE TO SUBMIT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS: Many students are eligible for scholarships but DO NOT submit the completed applications. You won’t be considered for a scholarship if an application is not submitted or is incomplete.

more than three entries per semester.  There is no limit on the number of school counselors
who may submit entries from a single school.

Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship
Application Deadline:  February 29, 2024

Each year the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Auxiliary awards 13 scholarships
in the amount of $1,000 to individuals, residing in the area served by
Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, who are pursuing a career in a
healthcare related field.

All applications must be typed and all required components of the application,
including the Checklist, must be in one envelope and submitted by
USPS mail postmarked no later than February 29, 2024

Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Connecticut
Application Deadline:  February 29, 2024

The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Connecticut announces its
2024 Scholarship Program. Applicants must be Connecticut residents enrolled in
or graduating high school seniors applying for and planning to enter, a four-year building
and construction technology or civil engineering program or entering a two-year technical
school with a construction course of study, with the intent of entering a four-year accredited
college upon completion of the technical school.  Applicants must desire a career in construction.

Six scholarships are available to students who are interested in a construction career:

• The Angelo Giardini Scholarship: $5,000 for two years, $2,500 each year
• The Michael Timura Scholarship: $5,000 for two years, $2,500 each year
• The Young Contractors Council Scholarship (2 available): $2,000 for one year
• The AGC of CT Foundation Scholarship (2 available): $2,000 for one year

Hagan Scholarship Foundation

This scholarship is available to all students attending public, private, charter,
magnet and STEM high schools.  The applicant's 2022 Adjusted Gross
Household Income must not exceed $100,000.

The scholarship provides up to $7,500 each semester for up to 8 consecutive semesters.

Connecticut Children's Foundation
Isidore Wise Scholarship 
Application Deadline:  March 8, 2024 by 4:00 pm

The Isidore Wise Scholarship Program will be awarding scholarships to deserving high school students completing their senior year in 2024.  Applicants must plan to attend an accredited post-secondary undergraduate institution in the fall.  All students who are past or present patients (inpatient or outpatient) of any of their Connecticut Children's locations may apply.

The Office of Early College Programs is pleased to announce that 2024 Student
Scholarship Applications are now being accepted through March 8th.
These scholarships will be awarded to exemplary UConn ECE seniors
in three separate areas of excellence:

  • Excellence in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences (2 awards)
  • Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (2 awards)

    The Shawn Kruse Memorial Scholarship
    Application Deadline:  March 25, 2024

    The Shawn Kruse Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a Torrington High School
    senior who is a member of the music program planning to attend a 4 year college.

    The application and selection information are as follows:

    - Recipient notified by: May 25, 2024

    The scholarship will be disbursed upon proof of successful completion of Recipient’s first
    semester at a 4 year college (a GPA of 2.0 or higher). A check will be mailed after
    Recipient provides a copy of his/her first semester transcript.

    Delta Kappa Gamma Grant
    Application Deadline:  March 25, 2024

    Delta Kappa Gamma Society is an international organization of women educators founded in 1929.
    This society was founded to recognize and foster high ideals in the teaching profession.
    An education grant in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to a graduate of a high school within
    the Delta chapter geographic area.

    Eligibility requirements are:
    1. intent to pursue a career in the field of education.
    2. positive contributions to community and/or school.
    3. an essay describing one's goals and explaining the decision to
    pursue a teaching career.

    The Connecticut Yankee Chorale Scholarship 
    Application Deadline:  March 25, 2024.

    The Connecticut Yankee Chorale is a community choir located in Torrington Ct, operating since 1984. The Chorale offers a $500 scholarship to a graduating high School senior who will be pursuing a musical degree in the Fall of 2024. The degree Pursued must be related to music in some form, i.e. instrumental, vocal, education, musical performance, etc.

    Submission Instructions: All submissions and related documents should be emailed to the Connecticut Yankee Chorale email address provided below with the subject line “CYC Scholarship Application-LAST NAME”. Scholarship applications will be reviewed by a scholarship committee after the deadline. 

    The selected recipient will be notified by April 6th, 2024. The scholarship will be presented on May 19th, 2024 at 4pm during the concert. The recipient will also be asked to perform a piece during that concert which will be coordinated upon notification of the scholarship award.

    This year, the Northwestern Connecticut Community Foundation
    will administer more than 30 scholarship funds.

    Connecticut Water Environment Association

    The Connecticut Water Environment Association is a non-profit organization composed
    of a community of operators, engineers and vendors that are involved in the
    wastewater industry within the State of Connecticut.

    This annual scholarship opportunity is available to graduating Connecticut seniors who
    plan on attending college in Fall of 2024 with a focus in an environmental related
    field and a GPA of 3.0 or greater. We will award up to four scholarships with a
    scholarship amount of $1000 per student.

    IMPORTANT SCHOLARSHIP/TRANSCRIPT AND RECOMMENDATION INFORMATION

    If transcripts (official or unofficial) are required with any scholarship application, the completed scholarship packet (including the correct amount of postage, addressed envelope to the scholarship organization) and the transcript request form are due to the Guidance Office A MINIMUM OF THREE SCHOOL DAYS PRIOR TO THE SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE!

    If the scholarship needs counselor and/or teacher recommendations included, the packet should be SUBMITTED TO GUIDANCE AT LEAST 7 SCHOOL DAYS PRIOR TO THE SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE! An addressed envelope, with the correct amount of postage should also be given to Guidance for mailing on behalf of the student.

    This will allow the transcripts/recommendation forms to be processed and mailed in a timely fashion. 

    Official transcripts cannot be given to students, parents, etc. but must go directly to the scholarship organization, committee, etc. If the scholarship needs to be placed in the mail, students are required to bring their completed scholarship application to Guidance 3 to 7 days before the scholarship deadline along with an envelope addressed to the scholarship organization, the correct amount of postage on the envelope and the signed transcript request form.  We will enclose the transcript/recommendation as needed and place in the mail.

    The Beauty + Wellness Scholarship for Women

    TUITION BREAK FOR NEW ENGLAND RESIDENTS

    The New England Regional Student Program (RSP) has attached a brochure called tuitionbreak which discusses college and financial aid options. Through RSP, students are eligible to pay a lower, regional tuition, instead of the regular out-of-state tuition, when they enroll at out-of-state public colleges and universities within New England and pursue degree programs not offered by their home-state public colleges and universities.
