College Representative Visits

College representatives are scheduling visits for the 2023-2024 school year.   These visits may be in-person or virtual.   Notification of these visits will be on Naviance and sign ups for these college visits will be made through your Naviance account.  

Any junior or senior is welcome to attend these sessions to learn about the colleges he/she might be interested in attending.

HIGH SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM

 NORTHWESTERN CONNECTICUT COMMUNITY COLLEGE
&

TORRINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

The High School Partnership Program is a special program designed to enable qualified Torrington High School juniors and seniors to take up to two college courses each semester at no charge. Students with a minimum of eighty percent scholastic average are eligible to participate in the program. Final selection will be based on the recommendation of the high school guidance counselor and the principal. High school students admitted to the program will be eligible to enroll in a maximum of two NCCC credit courses each semester on a space-available basis following the initial registration period for that semester. The students are responsible for buying their own books and providing their own transportation.

This Partnership Program allows high school juniors or seniors to earn FREE COLLEGE CREDITS!


COLLEGE TESTING

ACT TEST: The ACT is similar in length to the SAT with four sections-English, Math, Science and Reading for a possible point total of 36. There is an additional optional Writing component which you should always take as some schools may require it. ACT is curriculum –based with some logic-based questions. To register for the ACT log on to actstudent.org

 SAT TEST: The SAT test is a 3 hour and 45 minute exam composed of three sections- verbal, math and writing. Each section is worth 800 points for a possible total of 2400 points. SAT is based on critical thinking and problem – solving abilities. To register for the SAT and SAT subject tests log onto collegeboard.com.

SAT SUBJECT TESTS: Check with each college to determine if you will need to take these curriculum- based exams. When given the choice, choose the exams that will highlight your academic strengths.

ACCUPLACER TEST: The Accuplacer test will provide information about your academic skills in math, English and reading. The test is used by community colleges and some state colleges’ academic advisors and counselors to determine your course selection. The multiple choice tests are untimed.   • Career talks outlining skills needed to be successful in a particular career.

To prepare our students for the World of Work, the College & Career Center sponsors programs with the:

  • Connecticut Department of Labor
  • Northwest Chamber of Commerce
  • City of Torrington

The College & Career Center holds reference materials related to Careers, i.e. Dictionary of Occupational Titles, Occupational Outlook Handbook and Quarterly, Encyclopedia of Careers, Occupational Briefs, O*Net Dictionary of Occupational Titles as well as access to online information using the ten computers in the Center.
